A surprising number of lease approvals stall on paperwork rather than credit. Having the right documents ready before you apply makes the process faster and makes your application look stronger.
This is part of our guide to leasing a car for the first time.
The core documents
A valid driver's license. Current, not expired, and ideally showing your current address.
Your Social Security number. Lenders use it to check your credit. If you do not have one, some lenders accept alternatives. See leasing a car without a Social Security number.
Proof of income. Usually your two or three most recent pay stubs. Some lenders also accept an offer letter for a new job. See income needed to lease a car.
Proof of residence. A recent utility bill, bank statement or lease agreement in your name at your current address. It usually needs to be dated within the last 30 to 60 days.
Proof of insurance. You need coverage in place before you drive away, at the limits the lender requires. Get a quote early, because lease insurance requirements are stricter than most people expect. See insurance for a leased car.
If you are self employed
Pay stubs do not exist, so lenders use other evidence:
- Your last two years of tax returns, with all schedules.
- Recent bank statements, often three to six months.
- Business documents, such as a business license or articles of organisation.
- Sometimes a letter from your accountant confirming income.
See leasing a car when self employed for how lenders read these.
If you are leasing through a business
- Business formation documents and your EIN.
- Business bank statements and possibly financial statements.
- A personal guarantee is common for newer businesses.
See business car lease tax deductions.
If you have a co-signer
Your co-signer will need the same core documents: ID, Social Security number, proof of income and proof of address. See co-signers on a car lease.
If you are trading in a car
- The title, if you own it outright.
- Your current loan or lease account details, so the payoff can be confirmed.
- The registration, and all keys.
If you owe more than the car is worth, read trade in negative equity first.
Sometimes requested
- Personal references, usually a few names and phone numbers.
- Proof of a down payment's source, for larger amounts.
- Bankruptcy discharge papers, if relevant. See leasing a car after bankruptcy.
Tips that save time
- Make sure names and addresses match across your license, pay stubs and proof of residence. Mismatches are the most common cause of delay.
- Send clear, complete copies. A cropped pay stub gets sent back.
- Have everything as PDFs, ready to email, especially if you are leasing remotely. See car lease home delivery.
The short version
Have your license, Social Security number, recent pay stubs, a recent proof of address and an insurance quote ready. Self employed applicants need tax returns and bank statements. Trade ins need the title or payoff details.
