Why looking outside your market pays

The same car is priced very differently in different parts of the country, and manufacturer lease support varies by region too. A model that is oversupplied somewhere else can be genuinely cheap there and scarce where you live.

Restricting yourself to dealers within driving distance means accepting whatever those lots hold at whatever they ask. Widening the search is often worth more than any amount of negotiating on a local car.

Where you pay the tax

The rule that resolves most confusion: you pay sales or use tax in the state where you register the car, at that state's rate. Where the car was bought matters far less than where you live.

Some dealers collect your home state's rate and remit it. Some collect their own state's rate, leaving you to pay the difference at registration. Some collect nothing. We confirm which applies before anything is agreed, because the answer changes what you need set aside by thousands.

How delivery actually runs

Open transport is the standard option, the same carriers that deliver to dealerships. Enclosed costs more and is worth it on something expensive. Typical timelines run a few days on shorter routes to a week or two coast to coast.

One thing to do on arrival, whoever arranges the transport: inspect the car against the bill of lading before you sign it. Noting any damage at the point of delivery is what makes a claim work later.

Where do I pay sales tax on an out of state car?
In the state where you register it, at that state's rate. Depending on the selling dealer, tax may be collected on your behalf, partially collected, or not collected at all, in which case you pay your own DMV at registration.
